Indonesia's Anti-Dumping Probe Adds Fresh Headwinds for Chinese Galvanized Steel Exports
Oct 22, 2026 · Brynick Newsroom, Ningbo

Indonesia's Anti-Dumping Committee has launched an anti-dumping investigation into galvanized steel sheets originating from China, with the probe formally initiated on September 15. The move adds yet another trade-defense headwind for Chinese steel exporters, who have been shipping near-record volumes abroad even as major markets raise barriers against cheap steel imports.
According to customs data, China exported 1.1923 million metric tons of galvanized steel sheets in September 2026, up 21.32 percent from August but down 2.77 percent from a year earlier. Cumulative exports for the first nine months of the year reached 9.9816 million metric tons, 4.43 percent below the same period in 2025. The Philippines was the top destination in September with 142,000 metric tons, followed by Thailand at 119,000 metric tons and Israel at 62,000 metric tons. Analysts at Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) note that demand recovered across several Southeast Asian markets while shipments to the Middle East, including Israel and Iraq, also increased. Some Chinese exporters also accelerated order fulfillment and concentrated shipments in September in response to the newly announced probe.
Looking ahead, SMM expects China's galvanized steel sheet exports to remain relatively resilient in October, supported by sustained demand in Southeast Asia, though the analysts caution that anti-dumping measures in multiple overseas markets, combined with the absence of a sustained recovery in Middle Eastern demand, are likely to limit further growth — a significant increase in export volumes is not expected.
For overseas buyers of galvanized steel products — including wire containers, wire decking, and wire mesh partitions — the investigation is worth watching. If definitive duties are imposed, delivered costs from Chinese suppliers could rise and regional supply could tighten. Actual duty rates and the investigation's outcome are not yet known, so buyers with planned purchases may wish to confirm order schedules with their suppliers early. The broader backdrop also matters: China's steel export licensing regime, in force since January 1, 2026, continues to shape how quickly mills can move tonnage abroad.
