Why 3PLs are switching from solid shelves to wire decking for fire-code compliance
Oct 14, 2026 · Brynick Newsroom, Ningbo

More third-party logistics operators are replacing plywood and solid steel shelves with open wire decking. The open mesh lets sprinkler water reach lower levels — a requirement insurers and fire marshals increasingly enforce — while also improving light, visibility and dust control.
Wire decks also distribute carton loads across beams instead of point-loading them, reducing product damage claims.
If your racking still uses timber boards, a deck retrofit is typically a one-day, no-tools change per aisle.
