China's Exports Surge 36.3% in September as Trade Surplus Nears $1 Trillion
Oct 16, 2026 · Brynick Newsroom, Ningbo

China's exports soared 36.3% year-on-year in September, far outpacing the 25.0% growth recorded in August and crushing economists' forecasts of 25.5%, according to customs data released on October 14 (Reuters). September's growth was the fastest since February, when exports expanded 39.6%. Imports also accelerated, jumping 31.0% against forecasts of 24.5%.
The stronger-than-expected results underscore the resilience of Chinese manufacturing exports, which have for a second year defied Western pressure for more balanced trade. For the first nine months of the year, China's trade surplus reached $938.11 billion, putting the world's second-largest economy on course to surpass $1 trillion well before year-end — a milestone that would challenge last year's record of roughly $1.2 trillion.
For exporters of metal storage and material-handling equipment, the data signal sustained overseas demand even as domestic consumption remains subdued. The export boom has been driven in part by strong global demand for AI-related hardware and semiconductors; customs data shows integrated circuit export values surged 136% in September.
Meanwhile, the raw material backdrop for wire-product manufacturers has stayed broadly stable. According to Shanghai Metals Market's weekly review, steel wire prices held at USD 505 per metric ton last week, while wire rod and billet quotations in Southeast Asia held flat as Chinese mills resumed operations after the National Day holiday on October 8. Analysts expect prices to remain range-bound in the near term, with any upward pressure depending on how quickly buyer demand recovers in the fourth quarter.
Trade policy, however, remains a watch item. In a separate development this month, South Korea's Trade Commission formally commenced an anti-dumping investigation into Chinese seamless steel pipes, underscoring how export success continues to attract trade-remedy scrutiny across product categories. Exporters are advised to keep documentation and pricing records current, as investigations of this type typically reach a preliminary ruling within three to five months.
